10TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_SEQ_00Hardiboiled's pensive expression cuts a stark contrast to the frenetic buzz of True Vue's neon-lit streets.
21TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_SEQ_01Inspector's Log: We departed for the densely wooded environs of Yak's Tail in pursuit of a swift-moving succulent─another of Hardiboiled's fiendish fugitives. Purported to be an air-wheeler aficionado of unsavory repute, we learned that this spike-covered delinquent was racing around the forest in search of meteorites to smash and subsequently grab. When confronted, however, our quarry chose to flee, confident that his vaunted velocity would secure his escape. We gave chase upon the detective's trusty Night Stallion, ultimately outpacing the speedy cactuar and convincing him to surrender his superior's whereabouts. Alas, a miscalculation on my part resulted in our failure to apprehend Carnelian. As the furious detective has declined any further gentlemanly assistance, Nashu and I shall henceforth pursue independent inquiries into the masked mastermind...the man we now know as “Keshkayi”! * * * The salvaged data contains no further mention of monster-fied criminals, but what Hardiboiled has discovered is plans for repairing a “duplication device.” Said gadget was reportedly found aboard a flying vessel you immediately recognize as PuPu's flying vessel, and your description of its capabilities leaves the detective aghast. By your estimation, Keshkayi has already acquired all the materials required to effect repairs, and Hardiboiled is fresh out of leads. He heads off to visit Mymond and tap into the city's rumor mill, but your own departure is delayed by a disguised Hildibrand and Nashu. The intrepid pair intends to keep a watchful eye on the oglop following Hardiboiled, convinced it may prove crucial to cracking the case...
32TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_SEQ_02Mymond, the master of everyone else's business, has no direct information regarding the duplication device or calamities arising from its abuse, but he does have another interesting tidbit to share. It seems a hunter by the name of Circine came upon a badly wounded researcher out in Heritage Found and carried the man back to his house in the outskirts. Wondering if the wounded individual could be Keshkayi himself, you make for the hunter's abode to confirm if your suspicions are true.
43TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_SEQ_03Circine tells you of how he witnessed an air-wheeler crash to the ground, and his rescue of the man who crawled from the wreckage. The convalescing researcher is in no state to talk, but the hunter is nevertheless able to provide you with a name based on the identification card found on his person: Keshkayi. Hardiboiled attributes the villain's terrible burns to Carnelian, and with little else to do until Keshkayi awakens, you head outside to ponder what led to this fiery betrayal.
54TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_SEQ_04Hardiboiled reasons that Carnelian only played the lackey long enough to get his hands on the duplication device. As for what the Crime King would want to duplicate, the detective muses that an old accomplice of Carnelian's might have insights to share. She now works as a fortune-teller out of a shop in Solution Nine, which means your first step is dealing with her receptionist, Saralla.
65TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_SEQ_05Kacia is rather bemused by Hardiboiled's question regarding the duplication device and why her former associate would want it. She can only attest to Carnelian's insatiable desire to augment his arcane strength. As things stand, he lacks the power to cast the ultimate spell devised by his ancestor─an infamous archmage known as “the Lich.” Kacia suggests researching this sinister forefather using the public database, which Hardiboiled intends to access via the terminals in the commerce sector.
76TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_SEQ_06While the detective digs into the Lich's history, he asks that you read up on the clot─the species of monster which Carnelian specifically requested as the vessel for his soul. With the chat mode in **Say**, enter the search term “Clots” at the commerce sector data terminal.
87TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_SEQ_07You educate yourself on the peculiarities of clots, learning that these amorphous creatures can merge both their physical bodies and magical potential with others of their kind to form a single powerful entity. This is exactly the sort of information Hardiboiled will wish to know...
98TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_SEQ_08Hardiboiled's own research has uncovered several disturbing facts about the Lich, including the mage's propensity for raising the dead and his invention of an unstoppable spell capable of instantly killing any living creature. After listening to your report on clot characteristics, the detective deduces Carnelian's grand scheme: to make multiple copies of himself and fuse with them into one massive, murderous Crime King capable of casting the ultimate spell of slaying. Even as Hardiboiled makes plans to foil this ambition and claim vengeance for Noirshu, he receives a call from Circine informing you that Keshkayi has regained consciousness. Once again, the detective's departure heralds the arrival of Hildibrand and his assistant. Lack of evidence notwithstanding, Nashu, it seems, is all but convinced that Noirshu was not actually killed, but rather transferred into the body of the oglop. They promise to keep you apprised of their ongoing investigation, even as you look to rejoin Hardiboiled at Circine's house in the outskirts.
109TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_SEQ_09Hardiboiled remarks on your tardiness, but nevertheless appears glad of your presence. The case is building towards an explosive end, and he would hate for you to miss it...

4948TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_000Player. Eager to get back to work, I see.
5049TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_001I reconstructed the remaining files, but found no more records of monster-fied criminals. So I reckon we're clear on that front.
5150TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_002What the last of the data did contain, though, was plans for repairing some kind of fancy-schmancy “duplication device.” Said it was discovered aboard a flying vessel of unknown origin.
5251TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_003...The description of which damn near perfectly matches the shiny disc our imbecile inspector crash-landed over near Yuweyawata. So now I'm wondering, what's a gadget on a ship like that used to duplicate?
5352TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_004...Anything? Even *people*!? Oh, that ain't good... See, the files mentioned three critical materials: electrope, ceruleum, and meteorites.
5453TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_005Sound familiar? That's the same stuff our fugitives already nicked. They got what they needed to fix the device, and I'm sweating bullets imagining what they mean to do with it.
5554TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_006Problem is, we've squeezed those salvaged files dry of every last juicy lead. Can't even begin to guess where Keshkayi and Carnelian might be holed up.
5655TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_007For all we know, they've already moved on to the next step of their diabolical scheme. It's time we pumped a new source of information, and I know just the nosy bugger that'll do. Let's pay a visit to Mymond.
5756TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HILDIBRAND_000_008You may recall my mere presence seemed to anger the detective when last our paths crossed, so we've taken to disguising ourselves as ordinary citizens.
5857TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HILDIBRAND_000_009Our independent investigation otherwise continues unabated. Nashu has, in fact, identified a new potential avenue of inquiry...
5958TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_NASHUMHAKARACCA_000_010I've noticed that there's an oglop that never strays far from Detective Hardiboiled's side. And I suspect this persistent insect is much more than it appears!
6059TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_Q1_000_000What will you say?
6160TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_A1_000_001I share your suspicions.
6261TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_A1_000_002Maybe it's just a bug with a taste for gumshoe?
6362TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_NASHUMHAKARACCA_000_011It's been following him ever since we passed through Vanguard. This is not ordinary bug behavior!
6463TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HILDIBRAND_000_012We could be dealing with another creature possessed of a transferred criminal soul. Mayhap it's been sent to spy on the detective!
6564TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_NASHUMHAKARACCA_000_013But, it doesn't feel like spying. More like it's...watching over him.
6665TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HILDIBRAND_000_014Whatever the oglop's intentions, we must continue to surveil this ever-present surveiler. It may prove critical to cracking the case!
6766TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_019I'm worried Keshkayi's already hatched his master plan... But let's not mourn our own chickens before we've heard what Mymond has to say.
6867TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HILDIBRAND_000_020You can see it in the oglop's beady eyes─the intensity that surely marks a dedicated spy.
6968TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_NASHUMHAKARACCA_000_021Seeing how concerned the oglop is for the detective makes me feel all warm inside.
7069TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_MYMOND_000_030Back again? What can I do for you this time?
7170TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_031Got an odd question for you...
7271TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_MYMOND_000_032A device that can duplicate anythin', eh? In the wrong hands, that could lead to all kinds of mischief.
7372TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_MYMOND_000_033I haven't heard a peep about alien gadgets...but there was something else that might interest you. Rumor has it some half-dead bloke dressed like a lab worker was rescued out in Heritage Found.
7473TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_034You reckon that could be our villain Keshkayi!?
7574TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_MYMOND_000_035Could be. You'd have to talk to Circine, the hunter who found the poor bugger. Apparently he brought him back to his home in the outskirts.
7675TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_036If this half-dead lab rat is who we think it is, then I wonder if Carnelian must've...huh.
7776TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_037Thanks for the tip, Mymond.
7877TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_100_037Well, partner, looks like we're headed to the outskirts. Let's find this “Circine” fella.
7978TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HILDIBRAND_000_038And we shall follow wheresoever the oglop leads us.
8079TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_MYMOND_000_040Last I heard, that lab worker was still laid up at Circine's house in the outskirts.
8180TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_MYMOND_100_040Oh, and uh...you do know the detective's older twin is stalkin' you, right? If he's tryin' to stay out of sight, he's doin' a terrible job of it.
8281TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HILDIBRAND_000_041What chicanery is that insect plotting? Mayhap it has designs upon the detective's beloved eggs?
8382TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_NASHUMHAKARACCA_000_042Did you see that darling little buggy behind!? It's so round and shiny!
8483TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_043This is the hunter we're looking for. Now to see what he knows about his injured houseguest.
8584TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_CIRCINE_000_050Ah, of course. I'd be happy to share the tale.
8685TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_CIRCINE_000_051I was culling monsters on the fringes of Everkeep when an air-wheeler wobbling through the skies above caught my attention.
8786TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_CIRCINE_000_052So erratic was its flight path that I half-expected it to crash into the ground...which it did not far from where I was standing. I ran over to see a man crawl free from the wreckage and collapse, his mask and gloves marking him as a lab technician of some kind.
8887TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_CIRCINE_000_053Though the air-wheeler hadn't exploded or burst into flames, he looked terribly burned. I was able to rush him home and administer treatment before he succumbed to his injuries, but the potent medicines have put him in a deep slumber, so I'm afraid he is in no state to answer questions.
8988TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_CIRCINE_000_054As for his name, I found an identification card tucked into one of his pockets. Assuming it belonged to him, the man is “Keshkayi”─a researcher from a local facility.
9089TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_055That figures. And those burns... Knowing Carnelian's preference for fire magicks, I'd wager a dozen hard-boiled eggs that he's to blame.
9190TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_056A mook dubbed the Crime King is not the type to play loyal henchman for long. Probably turned on his boss and took over the whole operation.
9291TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_057We'll have to wait until Keshkayi wakes up to get the whole story, but in the meantime, I'd rather be doing something useful. I say we head outside and consider our options.
9392TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_058Appreciate you sharing, Circine. Keshkayi is a criminal involved in a case we're investigating, so we'll be imposing on your hospitality again soon.
9493TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_CIRCINE_000_059A criminal, you say? Well, he won't be committing any crimes in his condition. I'll be sure to get word to you once he's fit enough for you to interrogate.
9594TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_CIRCINE_000_060I figured the man had his secrets, but didn't expect him to be a hardened criminal. In any case, I'll let the detective know as soon as this “Keshkayi” awakens.
9695TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HILDIBRAND_000_061Does the oglop stalk its prey with intent to pilfer a hard-boiled prize...?
9796TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_NASHUMHAKARACCA_000_062So sweet how the oglop has eyes for nothing but its friend!
9897TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_070I doubt Carnelian would've humored his boss for so long unless he had an endgame in mind.
9998TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_071And considering his betrayal came just as they'd acquired everything needed to fix the duplication gadget...
10099TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_Q2_000_000What will you say?
101100TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_A2_000_001He was probably after the device all along.
102101TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_A2_000_002(...Do I really need to finish this sentence?)
103102TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_072That's what I'm thinking. But assuming we're right, what does he mean to use it for?
104103TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_073I'm thinking he was probably after the device all along. But assuming I'm right, what does he mean to use it for?
105104TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_074Well, we can work on answering that question while Keshkayi is still in dreamland. There's an old pal of Carnelian's who might have an insight or two...
106105TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_075Was part of his gang back in the day, but insists she's on the strait and narrow now, working as a fortune-teller out of a shop in Solution Nine. Saralla, the girl on the front desk, handles all her appointments.
107106TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HILDIBRAND_000_076Quickly, quickly! Let us not lose sight of the oglop!
108107TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_080This is the shop I was telling you about. Saralla there ought to wave us through.
109108TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HILDIBRAND_000_081Where has that four-legged skulker scurried off to...?
110109TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_NASHUMHAKARACCA_000_082Zzz... Teensy cutesy oglop... Zzz... Fits in the palm of your hand...
111110TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_SARALLA_000_090This establishment caters to lost souls seeking their true path. Due to high demand, however, I'm afraid we're completely booked for the coming months.
112111TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_091We're not interested in your dubious divinations. You just tell ol' Kacia that Hardiboiled is here to see her.
113112TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_SARALLA_000_092...Very well. One moment, please.
114113TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_KACIA_000_093What do you want, Hardhead? I've paid my debt to society. You're interfering with the legitimate business of an upstanding citizen.
115114TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_094Pfft, says the woman who was Carnelian's most prized sorcerous charlatan. I'll wager the only fortune to be found here is the one you're making off gullible marks.
116115TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_KACIA_000_095Don't you dare lump me in with that double-crossing snake. It was his fault I went to prison, and I've been done with the underworld ever since. My establishment is entirely above board.
117116TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_096Alright, alright, don't get your robes in a twist─it's Carnelian I wanna ask about anyhow. I'll spare you the whole messy story, so let's get down to brass tacks...
118117TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_097Imagine there's a gizmo that can replicate any person or object in the world. What do you reckon a no-good crook like Carnelian would do if he got his hands on something like that?
119118TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_KACIA_000_098What kind of addle-brained─ How should I know!?
120119TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_KACIA_000_099The only thing Carnelian ever wanted was power, and no matter how much he got, it was never enough. Seems his ancestor─the one they called “the Lich”─created the ultimate spell, and it eats him up that he's never had the arcane strength to cast it.
121120TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_100An ancestral spell he hasn't got the juice for, huh? But...how would a duplication gizmo help him with that?
122121TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_KACIA_000_101Not my area of expertise. Though I suppose you could search the public database and read up on the Lich, if you're so inclined.
123122TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_102Fair enough. We'll try our luck with the terminals in the commerce sector. Much obliged, Kacia.
124123TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HILDIBRAND_000_110I am a topiary of enquiry, and decorative foliage extraordinaire...
125124TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_NASHUMHAKARACCA_000_111I'm a shrubbery!
126125TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_120These terminals are connected to Alexandria's public database, so you can use them to learn all sorts of neat stuff. I'll see what I can dig up on this “Lich” character.
127126TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_121Meanwhile, reckon you could look into what makes “clots” so special?
128127TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_122Keshkayi's other flunkies didn't get a choice of monster, but when it came to Carnelian, seems the Crime King *specifically requested* the clot as a vessel for his soul.
129128TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_123I figured he was keen on their powers of mimicry, but now I'm wondering if there was something more. Anyway, see what you can find.
130129TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_SYSTEM_000_122With the chat mode in **Say**, use your keyboard or the software keyboard to enter the search term “Clots” at the commerce sector data terminal.
131130TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_130I'll do some sleuthing into this “Lich” character. Your job is to become an expert in clots.

136135TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_SYSTEM_000_142
137136TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_SYSTEM_000_143The terminal monitor displays an entry on the monsters known as “clots.”
138137TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_DATATERMINAL05481_000_144(-Commerce Sector Data Terminal-)Clots: These amorphous organisms inhabit dense jungle environments and demonstrate an extraordinary capability for physical mimicry. When threatened, the clot will either mirror the threat itself, or adopt a more intimidating form.
139138TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_DATATERMINAL05481_000_145(-Commerce Sector Data Terminal-)Clots can also fuse with others of their species, and there are recorded cases of multiple clots merging into a single gigantic entity possessed of immense magical power.
140139TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_150Well, no surprises from the bloodline that produced a maniac like Carnelian. Turns out this Lich guy is a real piece of work.
141140TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_151The entry I read said he used sorcery to raise and bind the dead to his will, and created an unstoppable spell that would immediately snuff out the life of any target. Oh, and that he also used necromancy to turn himself into a living corpse.
142141TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_152This allowed him to keep amassing dark powers over a period far beyond a normal person's lifespan...which was the thing that earned him the “Lich” moniker. Too many years of nefarious undead-ing, though, and the people came together to off him permanently.
143142TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_153You know, Noirshu─my assistant─was killed by a spell I'd never seen before. And I reckon Carnelian took a page from his ancestor's book of necromancy to animate those poor bastards at the Kanilokka Corpus.
144143TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_154How did your research go, by the way? Learn anything useful?
145144TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_155So multiple clots can merge together to make one humongous blob that wields all their magical power combined...?
146145TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_156That explains everything. Carnelian means to create a bunch of Crime King copies and fuse into one big, murderous mook!
147146TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_157Well, you and me are gonna wreck those plans and avenge Noirshu's death once and for all!
148147TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_Q3_000_000What will you say?
149148TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_A3_000_001Do you want to loop Hildibrand in on this?
150149TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_A3_000_002The inspector might be able to help with that.
151150TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_158Yeah, I've seen him hanging around like a bad smell. But when it comes to exacting vengeance, that well-meaning dope'll only get in the way.
152151TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_100_158And besides, Carnelian is more dangerous than he's ever been. I won't give him the chance to hurt anyone else...
153152TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_159Why are you so bullheaded about me being pals with the inspector, anyway?
154153TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_Q4_000_000What will you say?
155154TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_A4_000_001You make a good team.
156155TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_A4_000_002You share the same soul.
157156TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_160Me and the soft-boiled “gentleman”? Gimme a break...
158157TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_161You saying we're like two of a kind? Yeah, I don't see it...
159158TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_100_162Still, there's always been something weirdly familiar about that guy.
160159TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_162...Yeah, what've you got? Uh-huh. Alright. Be there soon.
161160TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_163That was Circine telling us to come over. Keshkayi's woken up.
162161TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_NASHUMHAKARACCA_000_164I've been thinking, Player... What if the oglop we keep seeing is actually Noirshu?
163162TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_NASHUMHAKARACCA_000_165When the detective was talking about his assistant, I *swear* that insect had the saddest look on its little face.
164163TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HILDIBRAND_000_166Come, come now, Nashu. You heard as well as I did that she perished by Carnelian's hand.
165164TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_NASHUMHAKARACCA_000_167But what if instead of dying, her soul was shunted into an oglop body in the same way the fugitives were stuffed into fiendish forms?
166165TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_Q5_000_000What will you say?
167166TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_A5_000_001I suppose it's possible...
168167TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_A5_000_002Sounds like wishful thinking...
169168TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HILDIBRAND_000_168Nashu *does* have an uncanny sense for such things. Mayhap we should not dismiss the idea out of hand.
170169TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HILDIBRAND_000_169Indeed... However, Nashu *does* have an uncanny sense for such things. Mayhap we should not dismiss the idea out of hand.
171170TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HILDIBRAND_000_170Were we to explore the possibility, we might begin by chatting with the researcher zombie whom my Gentle Dead Man acquaintance befriended.
172171TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HILDIBRAND_000_171Pray continue your investigation alongside Detective Hardiboiled, and we shall contact you the moment we learn aught of substance!
173172TEXT_CHRHDB951_05481_HARDIBOILED_000_180You're late, chief. Get lost on the way or what? This case is promising an explosive end, and I'd hate for you to miss it.
